Officially classified as a “populated place,” the small community of Berlin is situated directly east of Cullman and is less than a ten-minute drive from the downtown area. The lush, serene setting allows for a relaxed pace of life and you will find many waterways, ponds and small lakes here.
What’s in the Area
A primarily residential community, Berlin does have a small commercial district centered on the intersection of State Route 74 (US-78) and County Road 747. This is where you will find Walker’s Corner, a local landmark, which is just across the street from the Berlin Baptist Church and is right beside the Berlin Volunteer Fire Department.
Area lakes include Twin Fork Lake, Forest Ingram Lake and Lake Catoma (also referred to as the Catoma Reservoir). The last has a 536-acre surface area and is a popular spot for fishing, boating and swimming. The surrounding area is great for hiking and birdwatching as well.
Berlin is also close to the 159-acre North Alabama Horticulture Research Center, administered by Auburn University, as well as the Cullman Regional Medical Center. One of north Alabama’s leading hospitals, Cullman Regional is a 145-bed facility and offers a wide range of services, from cardiovascular services to obstetrics to occupational therapy. The hospital also has a Diabetes Care Center and a Women’s Diagnostic Center.
Schools and Real Estate
Berlin is served by schools in the Cullman County Schools system, specifically those that also serve the nearby community of Holly Pond. These are Holly Pond Elementary, Holly Pond Middle and Holly Pond High.
